Bike Safe Streets respects participant privacy. The initiative is designed to understand broad community trends and prepare aggregated reporting, not to identify, track or profile individual people.
Participation is voluntary. No specific identifying information is required to complete the survey or share a route.
What we collect
Bike Safe Streets may collect survey responses, optional route information, photographs, approximate location information and optional contact information. The route-sharing process should not require names, email addresses, home addresses, workplaces, schools, phone numbers or other specific identifying information. Participants should not include this information in route descriptions, uploaded files, screenshots or comments. If optional contact information is provided, it will be treated as private and used only for the purpose explained at the time it is collected.
Why we collect it
Information is collected to better understand experiences with cycling infrastructure and to produce aggregated public findings. Data may be used to identify trends, recurring themes, commonly used connections, infrastructure that people value and locations where participants report gaps or challenges. The purpose is community-level analysis and reporting, not individual identification or tracking.
How information is used
Information may be reviewed, categorized and combined with other responses to prepare aggregated statistics, trend summaries, generalized route maps, community-level findings, anonymized or non-identifying quotations, public reports, and presentations for communities and decision-makers. Only the information needed for these purposes should be submitted.
What may be published
Bike Safe Streets may publish aggregated statistics, generalized route maps, anonymous quotations and photographs where permission has been provided. Public results may describe broad locations, communities, infrastructure types and recurring themes. Route information may be shortened, generalized, combined with other submissions or excluded from public display where necessary to protect privacy.
What will not be published
Names, email addresses, home addresses, workplaces, schools, phone numbers or other identifying contact information will not be publicly shared without permission. Bike Safe Streets will not intentionally publish information that directly identifies an individual participant. Specific route details may be withheld or modified if they could reasonably reveal a participant's home, workplace, school or another private location.
Route privacy
Participants should avoid submitting private locations they do not want shared. Before submitting a route, consider trimming or hiding the beginning and end of the route, especially if those points identify your home, workplace, school or another sensitive location. Participants should remove personal information from screenshots, map links and route files before uploading them. Route data may be trimmed, generalized or aggregated before being displayed publicly.
No identifying information required
You do not need to provide your name, email address, home address, workplace, school or phone number to share a route or provide feedback. Please do not include specific identifying information in open-text responses, route descriptions, uploaded files or screenshots.
Trends and reporting
Information is used to understand broad trends and prepare transparent public reporting. Reports may show how many people participated, which communities were represented, what infrastructure people valued, where gaps were commonly reported and what improvements participants suggested. Results will be presented in a way that focuses on overall patterns and community-level findings. Individual submissions will not be used to identify or profile participants.
Optional contact information
If an email address or other contact information is offered, clearly explain why it is being requested and how it will be used. Optional contact information must remain private and must not be included in public reports, maps, charts or participant stories without explicit permission.
